Last week, I had a moment where 3 things I love came together all at once – Cibo (aka coffee and gelati), fashion and chattering. Anyone who knows me, I am sure would picture me holding a cup of gelati (yes, it is ALWAYS time for gelati) and talking the tail off a donkey (who says that anymore!?)…so I put those skills to work last week as I sat down with Damian and Andy, the fabulous masterminds behind Adelaide fashion label, Porcelain, and got the low-down. The smell of freshly ground coffee wafted up the staircase as we nattered away about this fabulous, and growing Adelaide design gem. What better way to spend an afternoon
Porcelain began in 2007, and has since then grown to be quite the label, with stunning pieces being produced left, right and centre – and all from Damian’s own home.
Damian and Andy have been friends for years and combined their skills for a great cause – for FASHION. Damian is the creative force and Andy is the business brains of the label.
Damian says his designs are;
“very vintage and 80’s inspired. I like to re-interpret icons from the past..Hollywood old-school starlets. My pieces are clothes to be seen in, from dressy day-wear to evening wear, it’s all got some glamour”
Here are some gorgeous snaps from Porcelain’s past collection featuring glamourous silks and vintage-inspired Hollywood-esque gowns, as well as gorgeously glam shirts and skirts. Fit for a stroll down Rodeo Drive – very Beverly Hills darlings!
His inspiration?
“The Madonna, rock-star kind of look has always inspired me, as well as Marilyn Monroe, Kylie Minogue..glamourous women. I also turn to fads, trends and TV shows from the 80’s a lot. And John Paul Gaultier – he has been a huge influence, as well as Galliano and Dior!”
On Fashion in Adelaide:
“People like George Gross and Harry Who, really set the benchmark, and people like Liza (Emanuele) – they are the people I have seen growing up in Adelaide, and show you what you can really achieve in this state. Adelaide is really building up its’ fashion scene. Tafe is involved in the festival a lot, and it’s largely involved in the emergence of young designers. We’re seeing that more people are willing to get involved in it and take risks from the doorstep of our state…that’s what I want to do – I want to stay based in Adelaide and work from here outwards, rather than the other way around.”
On the AFF:
“I am looking forward to showcasing our Sping/Summer collection, as it’s not yet been previewed…”
Porcelain will be delivering the goods at the Chambord SA Designers Fashion Showcase at this year’s AFF – tickets available here.
“The AFF is great because it brings everybody together – marketing, designers, models, photographers..it’s exciting to be involved in something like that. Featuring established designers as well as emerging designers really brings the whole community together”
Damian and Andy both agreed that the fashion industry in Adelaide is heaps good, as they say, but that it really works by fostering the fashion community – through everyone really communicating and helping eachother out. It’s the Aussie way!
That’s just another reason why the AFF is such a fabulous event for us Adelaidians, and fashion geeks alike. We get to absorb all the fashiony-goodness this fine state has to offer, and support our emerging talent at the same time. All in all, if my maths is correct (I never like maths very much, I mean seriously, who needs pythagoras!) this all adds up to an ever-growing and ever-fabulous SA fashion industry. I’d say that’s a pretty win, win, WIN.
Super excited to see what Porcelain produce for their new collection…in fact, I’m pretty sure you can feel my excitement through the blogosphere (or something technical like that)..
See you at the Showcase my lovelies,
