Inspired by their travels, Jacqui and Victoria, the girls behind newly launched brand POLKACO, are going back to basics, engaging the skills and craftsmanship of traditional artisans from all corners of the globe, bringing together a unique and colourful selection of handmade hats, blankets and baskets.
POLKACO’s signature collection of statement hats are handmade by the traditional Wayuu artisans, an American Indian ethnic group of the Guajira Peninsula in northern Colombia and northwest Venezuela. To the Wayuu, weaving is a symbol of intelligence, creativity and wisdom. Patterns and symbols on the hats represent the spiritual wisdom of their ancestors and each hat takes approximately eight hours to weave.
No two hats are the same, and each a piece of wearable art. They are practical with an understated sense of cool; striking without being ostentatious.
Ultimately POLKACO is about embracing century-old traditions and craftsmanship, translating into products that are not only beautiful and functional but, most importantly, long-lasting.
